Abstract

Replacement of Bronsted acid protons in zeolites by Ga ions shifts the mechanism of hydrocarbon conversion from protolytic cracking (C-H and C-C bond cleavage) to exclusive C-H bond cleavage via heterolytic dissocn. Charge-compensating GaO+ ions are more active than Ga+ ones but the former deactivate slowly due to decompn. to the latter under the reductive reactions conditions. Gallium-contg. zeolites are able to selectively convert propane to propylene.
