Abstract

Creativity is essential for software startups as it drives innovation and makes them create unique solutions to address market needs. C-level executives are in a strategic position to understand creativity from a perspective distinct from that of engineers and to bridge the gap between ideation and execution. Under this perspective, we explore the role of software developers in the creative processes of startups, which involves practices that are centered in divergent and convergent thinking. Through interviews with 17 key people (CEOs, CTOs, and CPOs) from startups in Europe and the Americas, this study highlights how software developers contribute to creative activities from ideation to user validation.
