Abstract
A 160 Gbit/s demonstrator towards the application for a low frequency antenna array network called LOFAR is presented. The structure of the LOFAR network and a combined optical time division multiplexing (OTDM)/wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system architecture (with each wavelength operating at 160 Gbit/s) for the long-arms in the network are introduced. The requirement and key technologies enabling 160 Gbit/s system are reviewed and discussed. Approaches employed in laboratory to realize the 160 Gbit/s system demonstrator for LOFAR network application is described. All key system functions are built in the laboratory rather than employing commercial available equipments.
