Abstract

The theme of this Liber Amicorum is "50 years ofInformation Systems in the Netherlands (1978-2028)", i.e., linking 25 years of experience in information systems to expected developments in the next 25 years. During Theo ‘s professorship in Eindhoven (1978-2004), the role of information systems has changed dramatically. Information has become digital and almost all business processes depend on information technology. Despite the achievements since 1978, many challenges remain. One of those challenges is to provide better support for casedriven processes, commonly referred to as office automation, workflow technology or business process management. This paper will discuss 25 years of experience with workflow technology and highlight some of the remaining challenges.
