Description

Overweight and obesity are refractory conditions of human physiology. By using personalized computer models of human metabolism the MATRyOSka project aims to obtain better understanding about the dynamics of the ‘obese system’. The project also investigates whether the effects of changes in nutrition and gut microbiota on metabolic health can be predicted.

Key findings

The MATRyOSka project investigated health and nutrition using a complexity science approach. We created personalized computer models of human metabolism for about 5500 people with overweight / obesity. Four model parameters were found to be predictive for metabolic health, and we validated these findings using independent measures. Part of the included individuals participated in a dietary intervention study, and we learnt that the effect of the diet could be explained by the model. The project has yielded important new insights into the complex dynamics of obesity and the effects of nutrition on metabolic health.
