Project: Research direct

The Maritime Innovation Impulse Project (MIIP)is an explorative study into the use of iron powder as a carbon emission free energy carrier for the shipping industry. A major target for this worldwide industry is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008. Metal fuels show potential as an energy-carrier in order to reach this objective.

The purpose of this project is to gain insight in the technical and economic feasibility of iron powder as a recyclable energy carrier for different types of ships. Additionally, an assessment is made of the steps that are needed to realize a full-scale prototype and the further research that is required in order to reach this long-term goal.
