Description

The role of the distribution system operator (DSO) is changing from a passive maintainer of electricity networks to an active coordinator in the edge of the energy system. At the same time, customers become enabled to change from passive energy users to active participants in the local electricity system. Maintaining privacy and grid (cyber) security levels are part of the challenge to face.

The challenges described require an advanced modelling toolset to understand customer behaviour and to assess the state of the electricity grid in detail. The latter is known as state estimation, providing detailed forecasted insight based on limited real-time measurements. To create impactful solutions for the DSO as well as all involved stakeholders in the energy supply chain, innovations should ensure replicability, scalability, and data privacy. Finally, security levels should be maintained: security of energy supply and cyber security to maintain the high availability level of the electricity supply in The Netherlands. We aim to lay a foundation for the further AI-powered development to cope with emerging issues that are currently largely unknown.

This project aims to enable an open-source integral framework with accessible services which allows developed functions being coordinated to support decision-making with optimal solutions for the DSOs. With a holistic approach, the project will tackle the challenges the DSOs are facing by accelerating the adoption of disruptive innovation in system operations. The ultimate goal is to leverage advantages from emerging digital technologies to cope with uncertainties from active participation of users as well as to optimize usage of grid capacities. This will be aligned with the need from the DSO partner (Alliander) in enabling the virtual grid concept which can increase flexibility in grid operation.
