Research profile

Yuan Lu currently holds the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial Design, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Since June 2021, she has taken on the role of Education Director for both the Bachelor and Graduate programs at the department. Lu is currently working on personalized behavior change technology, multi-stakeholder co-design, wearable technologies for physical activities, dietary intake behavior monitoring and continuous sodium measurement, preventive health and older adults, clinical implementation and impact studies and people with cardiovascular diseases and hypothalamic brain tumor. Since 2020, she has collaborated closely with Wageningen University of Research (WUR), University of Utrecht (UU), University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) on many related joint research projects sponsored by EWUU, an academic alliance between these universities and TU/e. Currently, she also teams up with medical professionals from Maximal Medical Center and Princess Maxima Medical Center to work on joint research projects sponsored by the Dutch Heart Foundation and the Dutch Cancer Foundation. Her earlier research focused on reliability, quality and reliability information flow analysis and customer dissatisfaction in new product development.

She has served as co-chairs at the conference track on Healthcare & Soceity at the Academic Design Management Conferences since 2016 and also as reviewers to a number of related conferences and journals. She became an editorial board member for the Digital Public Health section of Frontiers on Public Health in 2023.

Academic background

Yuan Lu holds a BSc and MSc in Mathematics from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China (1995). She also holds an MSc in Engineering from the National University in Singapore (1999). She was the first joint PhD graduate between National University of Singapore and Eindhoven University of Technology. After obtaining her doctorate in 2022, Lu joined TU/e as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Technology Management. In 2008, she became an Assistant Professor in the Industrial Design department of TU/e, and in 2012 she became an Associate Professor in the same department.In addition to her appointment at TU/e, she was a Liaison Associate Professor at the International Design Institute at Zhejiang University in China between 2011-2017. She was a Visiting Associate Professor in Taiwan Tech in 2016 and in University of Ferrara in 2019 and has been a Guest Professor at School of Software Technology at Zhejiang University in China since 2017. 

Education and Teaching

In 2012, Yuan Lu acquired the Certificate of University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). She has (co-) developed and delivered many bachelor's, master's, and EngD courses in the different departments she worked at TU/e. In particular, she co-developed the TU/e bachelor USE learning line “New Product Development and Marketing” together with the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences. She established the project squad education on Studio Silver in 2015-2017. Since 2004, more than 90 bachelor's and master's students have graduated under her supervision. 10 PhD students and 6 EngD students have completed their PhD and EngD thesis respectively with her supervision. She also provided her academic services and acted as a thesis examiner for PhD theses from ID, University of Ferrara, EPFL, and TUM

She has been also a member of the faculty council from 2010 to 2011, a member of the education committee from 2013 to 2014, a member of the faculty graduate program admission committee from 2014-2021, and an education coordinator between 2010-2021. Since June 2021, she has become the Education Director for both the bachelor and graduate programs at ID.
