Research profile
George Liu is a PhD researcher studying how ideas from urban design can guide the creation of attractive environments that encourages cycling as a practical and desirable mode of daily transport. Previously, his work at the University of Toronto analyzed cycling patterns in suburban communities and evaluated the effectiveness of bicycle mentorship programs in sustaining transportation behaviour change. He is cross-appointed at Eindhoven University of Technology and University of Amsterdam as part of the Smart Cycling Futures project.
George received his Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics from the University of Toronto in 2012. He went on to complete a Master in Environmental Studies degree at York University in 2014, specializing in cycling and urban transportation planning. Prior to starting his PhD in 2016 at TU/e in the Netherlands, George worked as a consultant for the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation and was a freelance transportation reporter for the urban planning publication Novae Res Urbis. George has additional expertise in human factors engineering and the study of driver behaviour in road safety research.
