Research profile

Varvara Kouznetsova is an Associate Professor in Multi-scale Mechanics of Solids in the group Mechanics of Materials at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). In her research she aims to understand, predict and tailor structure-property-performance relations in natural, engineering and functional materials, based on the underlying microstructural fine scale phenomena leading to emerging behaviour at the macroscopic, application, scale.  

The focus is on fundamental and methodological development of multi-scale techniques applicable to various materials and related physical phenomena. These range from advanced high strength steels to metamaterials, and from the behavior of structural elements under static conditions to the wave propagation phenomena and the development of damage and fracture. 

Varvara Kouznetsova aims to bring multi-scale mechanics to a next level by focusing on the emergent multiscale behavior due to non-trivial interactions across different space and time scales. This may result in the development of new metamaterials with unprecedented properties, leading to the development of new technologies and devices. 

Academic background

Varvara Kouznetsova holds a degree in Applied Mathematics from Perm State Technical University, Russia, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering fromTU/eFrom 2002 to 2009 she was a research fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Metals Research (NIMR) and the Materials innovation institute (M2i).
