Research profile

Tommaso Magrini is Assistant Professor in the Mechanics of Materials section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research focuses on the multiscale design, fabrication and characterization of architected materials and composites. Bioinspiration is at the core of his research: replicating the internal structure of biological structural materials using advanced manufacturing methods, Magrini aims at developing new engineering materials that combine high mechanical performance with multiple functionalities.

Academic background

Tommaso Magrini obtained his MSc in Materials Science at ETH Zurich (Switzerland) and BSc in Materials Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (Italy). In 2021, he received his PhD in Materials Science at ETH Zurich (Switzerland), with the thesis: ‘Tough and Transparent Nacre-like Functional Composites’. During his PhD, he was the recipient of the Silver Graduate Student Award by the Materials Research Society, for excellence and distinction during the doctoral studies. Awarded with the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Postdoc Mobility fellowship, he then joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Since 2024, Magrini is Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).
