Research profile

Tim Slangen obtained his PhD degree with the department of Electrical Energy Systems in 2023. His research was focused on the  effects of electric vehicle charging on the power quality in the medium- and low-voltage grids. Chargers for electric vehicles are large, non-linear devices with interactions that can lead to disturbances, one of which is supraharmonics. Tim's research focused on this new phenomenon and studied the emission, summation, and propagation using lab- and field experiments.

The research was in cooperation with the ElaadNL Testlab. Knowledge and innovation center ElaadNL researches and tests smart and sustainable charging of electric vehicles. ElaadNL is an initiative of the joint Dutch Grid Operators.

Academic background

Tim Slangen started studying Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology in 2014. He received his BSc and MSc degrees in this field in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

In 2019, he started working as a PhD candidate in the Electrical Energy Systems group at the same university, in close collaboration with Stichting ElaadNL, the Dutch research and innovation center on electric mobility and smart charging. This research resulted in his thesis "Supraharmonics and Electric Vehicle Charging: Study on Emission, Summation and Propagation of Conducted Disturbances in the Frequency Range 2-150 kHz".

Since November 2023, Tim is working as Strategist Power Quality & Protection at Stedin, one of the three major distribution network operators in the Netherlands.
