Research profile
Tim van Nuland is a PhD Candidate in the Mechanics of Materials research group in the Mechanical Engineering department. He is working on the joined program AiM2XL, specifically on the project "From structure to properties for large-scale additive manufacturing by wire deposition" under the supervision of dr. Hans van Dommelen and prof. Marc Geers. The goal of this project is to obtain a novel structure-property relationship for products made with large-scale deposition techniques based on computational modelling. The main challenge is to obtain the orientation-dependent strength and fracture behavior resulting from the spatially graded microstructure and in particular the effect of interfaces (including grain and phase boundaries) and defects.
Academic background
Tim van Nuland obtained his master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology in 2017 under the supervision of dr. Varvara Kouznetsova. His thesis, "Computational Homogenization of Acoustic Metamaterials with nonlinear locally resonant material behaviour", and MSc defence was awarded with a 9.5/10. Van Nuland did his internship under the supervision of prof. Katia Bertoldi at Harvard University. His project "Producing DC displacement with elastic waves via nonlinear management of locally buckling metamaterials" was awarded with a 9.5/10.
