Research profile
Rob Fey is Associate Professor Structural Dynamics working in the Dynamics and Control group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).
Rob's general research interest is in the field of ‘Structural dynamics for design and control of mechanical systems’ with a current focus on the following application fields: high-tech systems, mechatronics and micro-electromechanical systems.
Fundamental research focus is on:
1) modeling, analysis and identification of complex dynamical (mechanical and thermal) systems,
2) model complexity reduction of interconnected systems,
3) model updating/hybrid modeling/digital twinning, e.g. integrating first principles modeling with neural networks based on data,
4) passive damping in structural dynamics,
5) interface/component model uncertainty propagation in interconnected systems,
6) numerical and experimental modal analysis,
7) nonlinear vibrations,
8) translating dynamic assembly design specs to dynamic component design specs.
Rob’s teaching focuses on the modeling, analysis and identification of dynamical systems with a focus on structural dynamics systems.
Academic background
Rob Fey obtained his MSc-degree (cum laude) and PhD-degree in Mechanical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in 1987 and 1992, respectively. For his PhD thesis, he received the Shell Study Prize in 1992. He currently is Associate Professor Structural Dynamics in the Dynamics and Control group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) , the Netherlands. Before he started at TU/e, in the period 1992-2002, Rob has been working at the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), Centre for Mechanical and Maritime Engineering in Delft. He is in the Editorial Board of the ‘Journal of Vibration and Control’, member of the Engineering Mechanics Graduate School and member of the Vibrations Committee of IFToMM. In 2025, he received the Springer Nature Best Paper Award from the journal Nonlinear Dynamics for the paper ‘B.M. Kessels, R.H.B. Fey, and N. van de Wouw, Uncertainty quantification in real-time parameter updating for digital twins using Bayesian inverse mapping models, Nonlinear Dynamics, Vol. 113, pp. 7613-7637, 2025’.
