“The tremendous parallelism offered by optics, with each beam in space representing individual computations, may illuminate the future of neural computing”

Research profile

Ripalta (Patty) Stabile is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). She is expert in Indium Phosphide (InP) large-scale photonic integrated circuits based on semiconductor-optical-amplifiers design for high capacity nodes for next generation optical networks as well as the high-speed electronic control of on-chip integrated systems.

She is now considering her state-of-the-art photonic integrated matrices for application in optical computing and designing the architecture which sees the system co-integration of electronics and photonics: by exploiting the unique strength point of optics, which is parallelism, and by getting inspired by the way the brain works, she aims to overpass the operational speeds of processors at a much lower power consumption. She is already active in research and develop high data capacity high speed transceiver module, design and assembly, for fast and reliable communication between electronic boards.

Side activities are related to the development of low-cost passive coupling concepts for InP multi input/output ports circuits, as well as the exploration of new materials (aSi, 2D materials, polymer) for augmenting photonic integrated platforms performance.

Academic background

Patty Stabile received her MSc (with honors) in electrical engineering from the Politecnico of Bari (IT) in 2004. In 2005, she joined the National Nanotechnology Laboratory in Lecce (IT), where she received her PhD in Nanoscience in 2008. She moved to the TU/e COBRA Research Institute, where she was appointed as a Postdoctoral Researcher in 2009 and as an Assistant Professor in 2014 within Electro-Optical Communication (ECO) system group. In 2011 she has been visiting scientist for 1 month at University of Cambridge (UK), hosted by prof. Ian White, within the Photonics Research group, and in 2018 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Quantum Photonics group, hosted by prof. Dirk Englund.

In 2016, Patty was awarded the Early Career Women in Photonics – Special Recognition for her contribution to large-scale photonic integrated circuits for high-connectivity and high capacity optical switches. She is board member of the IEEE Photonics Benelux Chapter since 2016 and member of the TU/e Young Academy of Engineering and of the WISE network. She is author and co-author of more than 100 journal and conference papers in prestigious photonics conferences.
