Personal profile

Academic background

Pieter Pauwels works as an Associate Professor at the Department of the Built Environment at TU Eindhoven as well as Guest Professor at Ghent University. His work and interests are in information system support for the building life-cycle (architectural design, construction, building operation). He is involved in a number of industry-oriented research projects on topics affiliated to AI in construction, design thinking, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Linked Building Data (LBD), Linked Data in Architecture and Construction (LDAC), and Semantic Web technologies.

We need distributed building data over the web in response to today's challenge in the construction industry

Experience

Pieter Pauwels has always been strongly involved in research. His PhD research position was a fully funded research position (2008-2012), after which he took on a 100% research oriented Postdoc position at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA; 2012-2014). In this period, he gained experience in an interdisciplinary institute for Humanities and Computer Science. After 2014, Pieter has been mainly involved in the architectural design and construction industry, aiming to bring building data to the web (linked data, semantic web). With a half-time IT consultancy position between 2017 and 2019, a lot of applied software engineering experience was gained.

Education and Teaching

Pieter Pauwels lectures several BIM courses and courses on Building Informatics, including expertise in all sorts of databases (relational, graph, and object-oriented DBs) and programming languages (Java, .NET, Javascript, Node, Python). Most prominent are the courses:

  • UGain BIM: information management for construction (post-academic course)
  • UGent BIM modelling course: 3rd Bachelor Engineering Architecture
  • TUe Fundamentals of BIM
  • Building Informatics guest lectures
  • Linked Data in Architecture and Construction hands-on course

Research profile

In his research, he investigates how and to what extent information system support may be provided for architecture and construction. This research explores the usage of information management techniques, particularly including semantic web technologies and linked data, for design decision support.

Major topics in his research interest are:

  • Linked Building Data
  • Semantic Web technologies
  • (Design) Decision Support
  • AI for Construction
  • Creativity and Cognition in Design and Engineering

Expertise related to UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production
