Personal profile

Research profile

Pieter-Jan Hoes is an assistant professor in the unit Building Physics and Services of the Department of the Built Environment at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Pieter-Jan’s areas of expertise include building performance simulation, energy in the built environment and indoor environment quality.

His research focuses on computational design optimization of high performance buildings (energy, comfort). He is interested in design support methodologies that make use of computational models in an efficient and effective way. These methodologies are based on multi-objective design optimization, uncertainty and scenario analysis and risk analysis. Main topics of interest related to high performance buildings are performance robustness, energy flexibility and the influence of occupant behavior on building performance.

Academic background

Pieter-Jan Hoes obtained his MSc from TU/e in 2007; his thesis on occupant behavior modeling in building performance simulation was published in an international journal. After his graduation, he worked as a building (physics) engineer in industry. Pieter-Jan obtained his PhD from TU/e in 2014. After finishing his PhD research, he continued in the same chair as post-doctoral researcher and from 2016 as assistant professor. Next to this function, he was the operational manager of the EngD program Smart Buildings & Cities from 2014 to 2019. In this capacity, he was responsible for the daily operation of the post-master EngD designers program Smart Buildings & Cities (SB&C) of the Stan Ackermans Insitute.

One of his journal article about occupant behavior modelling received the Best research paper of the decade 2008-2017 award of the journal Energy and Buildings. He received the Best PhD student paper award at the International Conference for Enhanced Building Operations (ICEBO) 2010.

Pieter-Jan is member of the Editorial Board of the journal ‘Building Simulation: An International Journal’. He is reviewer for scientific journals such as: Applied Energy, Applied Thermal Engineering, Energy and Buildings, Building Simulation and Building Performance Simulation. He has been a member of several scientific committees of international conferences such as: Building Simulation, BauSim and CLIMA. Pieter-Jan is co-chair of the website committee of IBPSA World.
