“I am addressing experiences in the everyday and aim to create means to enchant the everyday through design.”
Research profile
Pierre Lévyis Assistant Professor of Everyday Transformation. Lévy is interested in applications of philosophy on interaction design, especially of applying embodiment theories and Japanese philosophy and culture to the everyday. His current interest is in the everyday and in the way to enchant it by design and technology (e.g., how to give value to banal things, such as the way to make tea in the morning, or the way one makes sense of data in everyday practices). The cultural and disciplinary diversity in his education encourages him to challenge common perspectives.
Lévy has contributed to the development of Kansei (‘affective’) research, both in Europe – as co-founder and former president of EKG – and in the world, as the first coordinator of the KEER Steering committee and the co-organizer of KEER2010, the first international Kansei conference outside Japan.
Academic background
Pierre Lévy holds a MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the Université de Technologie de Compiègne (France, 2001), obtained his PhD in Kansei (affective) Science from the University of Tsukuba (Japan, 2006), and has an habilittion à diriger des recherches from Université de Technologie de Compiègne (France, 2018). He did a postdoc at the University of Tsukuba and worked as lecturer for Chiba University (Japan). In 2009, he started as Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. For two years, he held a fellowship in design thinking at d.school Paris-Est, France. Today, he holds the position of coordinator of the Kansei Engineering and Emotion Research Steering Committee, and is also on the editorial board of the International Journal of Affective Engineering.
