Promoting health and well-being through real estate management and urban development
Research profile
Pauline van den Berg is an Assistant Professor of Real Estate Management and Urban Development at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Her research focuses on the healthy and social living environments, aiming on extending theories and using advanced modeling approaches to contribute empirical evidence on the impact of residential environments on human behavior and quality of life and the consequences for housing, real estate management and urban planning.
Specific areas of research are (local) social networks and social interaction, social cohesion, social satisfaction and loneliness, new technologies that promote healthy and social behavior, smart and healthy cities, senior friendly neighborhoods, walking and cycling behavior. Her research is supported by European and national grants. Examples of current research projects include the SOULMATE project that aims to secure old people’s ultimate lifestyle mobility by offering augmented reality training experiences; and the GOAL project with a focus on gamification for overweight prevention and active lifestyle
Academic background
Pauline van den Berg obtained an a MSc in Cultural Anthropology from Radboud University, Nijmegen (named Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen), an MSc in Architecture, Building and Planning (TU/e) and a PhD in Urban Planning (TU/e). She is and editorial board member for International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and has acted as a reviewer for many other journals.
Pauline has presented her work at various international scientific conferences and has been published in leading journals such as Environment and Planning A, B; Journal of Geographical Systems; Travel Behaviour and Society; Transportation; Transportation Research Part A, C. Pauline regularly supervises PhD and PDEng students in the domain of healthy and social living environments. She is a member of the Built Environment Team Health. She actively participates in the University’s strategic area Health.
