Research profile

Michael Burch is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His key expertise lies in the areas of Visual Analytics, Big Data, Information Visualization, Software Visualization, Graph Visualization and Eye Tracking.

Michael’s current project focuses on evaluating public transport maps. Eye movement data of people is recorded as they solve route-finding tasks and this spatio-temporal data is analyzed. Another project focuses on dynamic graph analytics. Visual analytics techniques are developed with the goal of deriving insights and knowledge from time-varying network data.

Concepts from data science combined with visual analytics approaches build powerful techniques to find insights and knowledge in various datasets. Michael works at the intersection of data science and information visualization dealing with relational, hierarchical, or spatio-temporal data from various application fields.

Academic background

Michael Burch holds a Dr. rer. nat. degree in Computer Science from the University of Trier, Germany. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Stuttgart University’s Visualization Research Center (VISUS) before joining TU/e in 2017. He started in the software engineering and visualization group of Prof. Dr. Stephan Diehl in 2004 and got his Diploma degree from the Saarland University, Germany.

Michael has authored and co-authored more than 130 conference papers and journal articles in the field of visualization and eye tracking. He is also one of the organizers and paper co-chairs of the International Workshop on Eye Tracking and Visualization. Michael is a member of many International Program Committees and has reviewed more than 500 papers and articles in his career.
