He received the M.Sc. degree (with distinction) in Electrical Engineering in 1978 and the Ph.D. degree in Technical Sciences in 1984, both from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Since 1978 he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering of TU/e, at present as an Associate Professor.

His current research interests are radiowave propagation, channel modeling and smart antennas for mobile communications, 60 GHz antennas for broadband in-house wireless networks, and performance analysis of mobile communication systems. His publications are in the areas of antennas, radio wave propagation, channel modelling for wireless communications, and atmospheric remote sensing.

At TU/e he gives lectures on "Wireless Communications" and "Antennas and Propagation". He represented TU/e at the Dutch Institute for Post Academic Education (PATO) from 1987 until 1993 for which he initiated and contributed to various courses in Electrical Engineering. He organizes post academic and in-company courses on "Satellite Communications" and "Land Mobile Radio Communications". From 1993 to 1996 he was Associate Editor of  "Radio Science" and since 2007 he is Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation.

Dr. Herben is a member of the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIvI), the Netherlands Electronics and Radio Society (NERG), the Dutch URSI-Committee, Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), treasurer of the IEEE Benelux joint Chapter on Communications and Vehicular Technology, and a member of the Management Committee of the COST Action 2100 - "Pervasive Mobile Ambient Wireless Communications".
