Research profile
Massimo Mischi is Full Professor in the Signal Processing Systems group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).
His research focuses on model-based quantitative analysis of biomedical signals, spanning from heart and muscle electrophysiology to ultrasound and MRI. His work is based on fundamental understanding and modeling of the full measurement chain, accounting for physiological sources, sensing physics, and noise sources and characterization. Main application domains are oncology, cardiovascular, gynecology-perinatology, sleep, and neuromuscular research, supported by a number of national and international grants in tight collaboration with clinical and industrial partners.
Mischi was awarded the STW VIDI Grant in 2009 and the ERC Starting Grant in 2011 for his research on contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging of angiogenesis for cancer diagnostics. He successfully valorized his scientific results through >10 patent applications, 4 implementations in commercial software and setting up "Angiogenesis Analytics", a high-tech company for imaging cancer angiogenesis (supported by an ERC PoC grant) and “HiPerMotion”, a hi-tech company for neuromuscular rehabilitation, based on two valorisation grants (Phase 1 and 2) awarded by the Dutch Foundation for Technology.
Mischi has (co)authored over 130 journal papers and 250 conference contributions. He serves as associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control, the journal Computer Medhods and Programs in Biomedicine (CMPB by Elsevier), and the Journal BioMedical Engineering and Research (IRBM by Elsevier).
Academic background
Massimo Mischi obtained his MSc in Electrical Engineering from La Sapienza University (Italy) in 1999. In 2004, he received his PhD from the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). There, he became Assistant Professor in 2007, Associate Professor in 2011, and Full Professor in 2018. In 2012, he founded the Biomedical Diagnostics (BM/d) research Laboratory, based on a team of over 25 researchers working in collaboration with key industrial and clinical partners.
Mischi is Senior Member of the IEEE, Chairman of the IEEE EMBS Benelux Chapter, Secretary of the Dutch Society of Medical Ultrasound (EFSUMB Section), and Board Member of the ESUI (Urological Imaging Section of the European Association of Urology).
