Mark Cornelissen is a PhD candidate in the Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion group, working in close collaboration with EPFL (Switzerland) and DIFFER (The Netherlands) under the EuroTech PhD program. Mark's research focuses on visualizing the plasma flows in the edge region of fusion devices.

Exhausting the immense heat from the core plasma through the narrow edge region remains one of the key challenges to realizing nuclear fusion as a sustainable energy source. Plasma flows play a central role in this exhaust process, yet persistent discrepancies between theory and experiment reveal that a comprehensive physical description of edge plasma flows is still missing. To address this gap, Mark applies a coherence imaging system capable of capturing plasma flows across the entire edge region.

Academic background

Mark obtained his bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics in 2020, followed by a double master’s degree in Applied Physics and in Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion in 2023, all at Eindhoven University of Technology. Before starting his PhD, he completed an external internship at IPP Greifswald and carried out his graduation project at DIFFER.
