Research profile
Luca Picelli is a Doctoral Candidate at the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) working on Nanophotonics.
In his research Luca investigates photonic crystal structures that are easily transferred from a fabrication wafer to the facet of a cleaved optical fiber.
These devices can be used as sensors for many different quantities by appropriate choice of the optical structure. Among the others they can sense refractive index, temperature, electro-magnetic quantities.
In addition, the robustness and size of the optical fiber allows them to be suitable for sensing in difficult to reach or extreme locations where conventional electronic devices would fail.
The possibility of producing them in large quantities in a simple and reproducible way could lead to a growth in their use in industrial and everyday applications.
Quote
With light we can do much more than what our eyes allow. Using fibers and metastructures we can push the limits of our perception even further.
Academic background
Luca Picelli obtained his Bachelor and Master degree in Material Science from the University of Padua (Italy), graduating with honors in the field of nano/meso-structured carbon-based materials for electrocatalysis.
In 2018 he moved to the Netherlands and joined the PSN group as a Doctoral candidate under the supervision of prof. Andrea Fiore. Here his research focuses on the design and realization of photonic nanostructures on optical fiber tip for sensing applications.
