Research profile
Luc Florack is full professor in the Centre for Analysis, Scientific Computing, and Applications in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He is the chair of the Mathematical Image Analysis group. His key research interests are mathematical representations of signals, images, and movies, particularly multiscale and differential geometric representations and their applications to imaging and vision. The application focus is on complex (non-scalar valued) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, notably diffusion and tagging MRI, and on biologically motivated models of ‘early vision’. The approach in all these cases is to depart from a geometrical representation and reformulation of clinical image analysis challenges, such as geodesic tractography for mapping structural brain connectivity (connectomics) and deformation and strain analysis for quantification of myocardial function. The motivation is to bring these hitherto unexploited techniques into the clinical workflow.
Tuition revolves around mathematical techniques for image analysis, tensor calculus, differential geometry, and linear partial differential equations.
Academic background
Luc Florack holds an MSc in theoretical physics and a PhD in medical image analysis from Utrecht University (with honors, top 2%). He has (co-)authored close to 200 peer reviewed papers, some of which invited. He has been on the editorial board of the Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision and has acted as a reviewer for over 30 other journals, conferences and workshops. In 1997 he co-founded the first conference in the biannual series of International Scale Space Conferences (currently also known as SSVM) and has delivered keynote lectures at a wide variety of national and international conferences and seminars.
Luc is a Member of Management Team 3TU.AMI on behalf of TU/e and of the Advisory Board for Mathematics (‘Wiskunde Tafel’) of the Dutch Science Foundation NWO. In the past, he has acted as Treasurer of the Royal Dutch Mathematical Society (KWG), paving the way for its Royal status on the occasion of its 225-th anniversary, together with the Board.
