Reliable simulation comes from proper modelling, which should be sufficient but is not necessarily complicated.

Research profile

Lei Liu is a PhD Candidate in Mechanics of Materials (MoM) group. He is working on "Multi-phase interfacial models for multi-phase steels", supervised by Dr. Varvara Kouznetsova, Prof. Marc Geers and Dr. Johan Hoefnagels, meanwhile with external supervision from Dr. Francesco Maresca, University of Groningen (RUG). The main goal of his PhD project is to develop a generic class of multi-phase (MP) interfacial models for MP steels, in particular dual-phase (DP) steels, after properly understanding the interface deformation and damage mechanisms. A two-scale interfacial modelling strategy is to be adopted, where each typical MP interface is represented by one dedicated volume element, such that a relatively cheap interface description with sufficient accuracy can be obtained in an efficient manner at the coarse microscale. Other research interests include novel homogenization techniques for complex applications, and analysis and design of metamaterials.

Academic background

Lei Liu obtained his BEng degree and graduated with distinction from Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NJUST), in 2015. After one-year industry experience on algorithm design, he continued his education study, and obtained his Honors MSc degree (cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), in 2018, with main focus on computational mechanics. For his first MSc internship, he was working on "Homogenization and multi-scale analysis towards double-negative metamaterials", in MoM group. For his second MSc internship, he visited Structural Impact Laboratory (SIMLab) of Prof. Magnus Langseth, in Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and was working on "Low-cost mesoscopic modelling and analysis for aluminium foams". For his MSc final project, he developed "A general homogenization method for locally resonant acoustic metamaterial panels", supervised by Dr. Varvara Kouznetsova and Ir. Ashwin Sridhar, in MoM group.
