Personal profile

“The business of architecture is to establish emotional relationships by means of raw materials.” Le Corbusier (1931).

Research profile

Bert van Schaijk is assistant professor within the research group Building Materials at the department of the Built Environment at TU/e, with the special mission to popularize scientific results into the experience of students. The group focuses on solving practical problems, answering scientific questions, examining new raw materials and developing innovative products in order to achieve ‘more with less’.

His own research concerns providing future buildings with a dynamic barrier that utilizes much better some environmental factors such as sun and wind. For this novel concept his developing a physical concept which regulates building ventilation, controls thermal insulation, and similarly offers daylight. A second research in the context of sustainability is the development of thermally insulating plus tectonic ceramics, with an optimal moisture management and good technical durability.

Academic background

Bert van Schaik received his Master's degree in Architecture and Building from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in 1984. Since 1989 he has been a researcher and since 1991 a teacher at TU/e. He currently tutors in the physics-based design-oriented disciplines.
