Klaas-Jan Tielrooij is an Associate Professor in the Applied Physics department of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), associated with the Advanced Nanomaterials and Devices group. He is also a Senior Group Leader at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) in Spain. Klaas-Jan leads the Ultrafast Dynamics in Nanoscale Systems group, which partially moved from Spain to the Netherlands in the summer of 2023. His key areas of expertise include ultrafast spectroscopy, terahertz photonics, optoelectronics, and layered quantum materials. One of his recent goals has been to reach a fundamental understanding of the transport and dynamics of electronic and phononic heat in 1D and 2D material systems through advanced optical and optoelectronic techniques with high temporal and spatial resolution, and to explore applications in photodetection and thermal management. The group continues to work on quantum materials, studying heat and charge flow, and will also address the conversion of energy and information between various degrees of freedom and across different frequencies. Klaas-Jan has received several prizes, including the FOM Physics Thesis Prize, and competitive grants including an ERC Starting grant (2018), an ERC Proof of Concept grant (2021), and an ERC Consolidator grant (2024).
