Personal profile

Research profile

Kiane de Kleijne is a postdoctoral researcher at the Technology, Innovation & Society group at TU/e. Kiane specialises in assessing the environmental or climate impacts of emerging technologies, particularly in the energy and industrial transition. Examples are green hydrogen, technologies that capture CO2 and use it in or as a product, and direct air CO2 capture and storage. She aims to understand under which conditions these technologies are best able to contribute to drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Kiane was chapter scientist and contributing author in the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5C (2018) (Chapter 4: Strengthening and implementing the global response), and in the Mitigation part of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (2022) (Chapter 12: Cross-sectoral perspectives).

Academic background

Kiane obtained a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from University College Utrecht, an interdisciplinary honours college. She continued with a master’s in Physics at Radboud University in Nijmegen, specialising in Science, Management and Innovation, and focussing on climate change and energy.

After her studies, Kiane started as a junior researcher at the department of Environmental Science at Radboud University. She also obtained her PhD there in 2024, with a thesis titled “The Paris compatibility of green hydrogen and carbon capture and utilisation technologies”.
