I find the combination of two days of Research & Design (R&D) classes at a secondary school and two days of research at Eindhoven University of Technology fun, varied and challenging.

After setting up a successful Technasium, I wanted to do research into the process-based side of the Technasium. Within the course R&D, the product looks at what the student has made in a group. The process looks at how the student develops as a person. R&D has been well designed by the Technasium foundation, but there is still room for improvement in the process-based side of R&D.

In 2015 I contacted the Eindhoven School of Education (ESoE), part of TU/e, to discuss the possibilities for conducting PhD research. The advice was to first do a university research master. So I studied educational sciences at the Open University in Heerlen. I have not regretted that for a moment and in September 2019 I completed this course with an 8 for my master's thesis. Thanks to a teacher promotion grant from the NWO, I started my PhD trajectory "Students learn to reflect, how do you guide that?" at the ESoE in September 2021.

My PhD research focuses on further training for R&D teachers in guiding the reflection process of students. During the first sub-study (school year 2021-2022), 23 R&D teachers from 20 different schools formulated learning questions about the reflection process of students and the way in which they want to follow training. Based on these learning questions, scientific literature and coordinated with the participants, a new, challenging professionalization development trajectory will be carried out in school year 2022-2023 and school year 2023-2024. During the trajectory, the usefulness of reflection experienced by students, the quality of the reflection reports written by students and the way in which students provide material input for the teacher are also considered.
