Research profile

The research of Jos Keurentjes focuses on two areas.

The research area 'sustainable process concepts' focuses on the development of novel process concepts for the industrial chemical, energy and agro-food domains. A number of technologies are used as enablers for this: membrane separations, supercritical fluids and surfactant systems. These technologies are often used in reacting systems, avoiding the use of organic solvents and allowing for integrated reaction/separation processes.

The research area 'high-gravity high-shear multiphase reactors' is executed in close collaboration with professor Jaap Schouten. This area focuses on the development of multiphase reactor systems that use rotation to create high gravity and high shear conditions, thus leading to excellent interphase mass transfer, intraphase mixing, and fluid-to-wall heat transfer. The emphasis here is on spinning disk reactors for reaction and separation processes.

Academic background

Jos Keurentjes studied Environmental Sciences at Wageningen University, obtaining his MSc in 1985 cum laude. In 1991 he obtained his PhD at the same university, also cum laude. After seven years at AkzoNobel Central Research (Arnhem, The Netherlands), he was appointed full professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at Eindhoven University of Technology in 1997. In 2007 he rejoined AkzoNobel, initially as Director Technology for the Industrial Chemicals business and subsequently as the Corporate Director for Technology and Open Innovation. In 2014 he joined the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Research (TNO) as Chief Scientific Officer and Member of the Board of Management.
