Jo Zelis is a cardiologist in training at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. Currently he's working on his PhD at the TU/e department of Biomedical Engineering, research group Cardiovascular Biomechanics.

His research is focused on aortic valve stenosis physiology and the treatment of aortic stenosis with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI). Together with dr. Tonino, Catharina Hospital Eindhoven, and dr. Johnson, UT Health Houston Texas, they introduced a novel index called the Stress Aortic Valve Index (SAVI), based on the Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) measurements invented by prof. dr. Pijls. This could improve patient selection for treatment which would improve the quality of life and survival of patients with aortic valve stenosis.

Academic background

Jo Zelis studied at the Maastricht University, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences where he obtained a MSc in science and medical degree in 2015. In 2016 he started his fellowship in cardiology at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. In 2017 he paused his fellowship to work on his PhD at the Eindhoven University of Technology, department of Biomedical Engineering.
