Current developments in electricity supply put pressure on the quality of voltage and currents, threatening grid stability and safety of connected equipment.
Academic background
Sjef Cobben is a research scientist at Alliander (the Dutch grid operator) since 1979. In 2002, he received his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, The Netherlands) with the distinction 'cum laude'. From 2003 until 2007, he performed part-time PhD research at the same university, resulting in his 2007 thesis 'Power Quality, Implications at the Point of Connection'. In 2009, he founded the company CO-Education, providing knowledge services and education in the field of electrical engineering, in particular regarding power quality, smart grids, and the sustainability of the electricity supply. In 2011, he was appointed part-time professor in Power Quality at the TU/e department of Electrical Engineering, research group Electrical Energy Systems.
Research profile
Sjec Cobben is a part-time professor in Power Quality with the research group Electrical Energy Systems at the TU/e department of Electrical Engineering. His main affiliation is with Alliander, the Dutch grid operator, where is a research scientist. His areas of expertise are LV- and MV-network safety, power quality, and safety of installations connected to the networks. His TU/e research theme of Power Quality concerns the quality of voltage, current, and their mutual interaction. This is of relevance to smart grid technologies, the integration of renewable energy sources, and the compatibility of devices, installations and networks.
