Academic background

Jeroen van Waes (1973) received his MSc degree (1996) and PhD degree (2003) in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven.

For his PhD thesis ‘Safety and EMC aspects of grounding: experimental studies in high-power systems’, he received the Hidde Nijland Prize at TU Delft in 2004. Between 2002 and 2017, he worked as a consultant of Movares for various organizations, including ProRail and TenneT System Operations. Since 2017, he has been employed by TenneT with a focus on power quality. As part of this role, he has been working at the Electrical Energy Systems (EES) group of the Department of Electrical Engineering of TU/e since 2019.

In the period 2012-2020, he chaired the CIGRE national study committee C4 Power system technical performance. He participates in CIGRE working groups on power quality and EMC. Jeroen van Waes is currently chair of the Dutch standardization committee Systeemaspecten van de elektriciteitsvoorziening (NEC 8).

Research profile

The energy transition will result in the generation of electricity from more renewable energy sources and the greater use of electricity as an energy carrier. As a result, the electricity network through which electrical energy is transported is undergoing major changes. Besides transmission capacity, the quality of the supply voltage is important. Voltage quality is defined as the degree to which the voltage waveform of a power supply system conforms to established specifications. An inadequate quality can result in the malfunctioning of equipment, increased aging of equipment, tripping of installations and loss of production process. Despite major changes in the system, the right quality of supply voltage must therefore continue to be ensured across all voltage levels. This research topic involves many stakeholders, all of which play a role in ensuring the quality of voltage.
