He is co-founder of the Industrial Design department and Data Science Center at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and also of the Technical Committee (TC) of Entertainment Computing of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).

Rauterberg is interested in designing interactive systems to address the cultural sub- or even unconscious layer of the user. He has a solid background in philosophy, psychology and computer science. He is in favor of a rigorous empirical validation of his design claims. His recent research is in the area of entertainment computing, cognitive systems, human-computer interaction, and design science.

As a prolific author, Rauterberg has over 450 publications in international journals, conference proceedings, books, and more. He is also editor and member of the editorial board of several leading international journals. He is co-editor in chief of the Entertainment Computing journal (Elsevier). He supervised more than 20 PhDs, 20% of which got a distinction (top-5%).

Academic background

Matthias Rauterberg holds a BSc in Psychology from the University of Marburg in Germany, two BSc degrees in Philosophy and Computer Science from the University of Hamburg in Germany, and two summa cum laude MSc degrees from the same university, in Psychology (1981) and Computer Science (1985). For his PhD research, he went to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, where he was awarded his degree in 1995. He worked there as a senior researcher until 1998, when he joined Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) as Full Professor. He has worked as guest professor at universities in China and Japan and served in two Technical Committees of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), on Human-Computer Interaction and on Entertainment Computing.
