Rienk Schuiringa is a doctoral candidate (PhD) in the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group under the supervision of prof. dr. Keita Ito and dr. René van Donkelaar. His project focuses on the biomechanical assessment of a bioengineered regenerative osteochondral implant for focal cartilage defects. This research is part of the MimiCart project of InSciTe and the osteoarthritis moonshot of RegMed XB and is in collaboration with Utrecht University and RWTH Aachen.

Academic background

Rienk Schuiringa studied the bachelor Medical sciences and Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology where he received his BSc degree in 2015. In 2018, he obtained his MSc degree within the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group of prof. dr. Keita Ito from the Biomedical Engineering department at the same university. His master thesis focused on the biodegradability of bioactive glass, in particular the active resorption of the hydroxyapatite layer formed on the surface of bioactive glass by osteoclasts. During his internship at the Surgical and Orthopaedic Research Laboratory, part of the Prince of Wales Clinical School of the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia), he worked on a newly developed bone graft coating to determine the antibacterial properties. In 2018, he started as a PhD candidate in the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group where he will work on the development of a bioengineered regenerative osteochondral implant for focal cartilage defects.
