Research profile

Feiran Zhang focuses on conducting design research to build a bridge between the user, technology, and innovative solution. She is interested in projects contributing to personal wellbeing (e.g., technology-enabled interventions for emotion awareness and regulation), improving learning experiences, and developing tools and methods for researching motivational and behavioral factors in the contexts of learning, design activities, healthcare, and everyday life.

Feiran has served as a reviewer for journals (e.g., Educational Research Review, International Journal of Child Computer Interaction, IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems, Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments) and conferences (e.g., Interaction Design and Children conference, FabLearn Flagship conference, FabLearn Europe, IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference). She has experience working with designers, educational practitioners and collaborated with researchers in Europe and China.

Academic background

Feiran received her bachelor’s degree in Art Design (with a top 5% GPA grade) from the Beijing Jiaotong University, China, in 2013. She received a master’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering (with a top 5% GPA) from Beijing Jiaotong University in 2016. During 2014 and 2015, she was awarded the Sino-Dutch Bilateral Exchange Scholarship (funded by the ministries of education of the People’s Republic of China and the Netherlands) to visit the University of Twente, the Netherlands. From 2016 to 2020, she was funded by the China Scholarship Council to conduct her doctoral research at the Eindhoven University of Technology. In May 2021, Feiran successfully defended her doctoral dissertation entitled “emotions in design-based learning.” Recently, Feiran has been awarded a prestigious ERCIM Alain Bensoussan Fellowship (funded by the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics).
