Research profile

Since 2019 Elias Salzer is a doctoral candidate at the Orthopaedic Biomechanics research group under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Keita Ito. His PhD project is part of the Horizon 2020 project ‘iPSpine – induced pluripotent stem cell-based therapy for spinal regeneration’. Elias’ part in this interdisciplinary project is the investigation of a tissue culture system and the in vitro evaluation of potential intervertebral disc tissue regeneration strategies.

Academic background

Elias Salzer was born in Austria. He studied Biomedical Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, where he focused on Cell and Tissue Engineering. After receiving his BSc in 2016, he continued to study Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in Vienna. During this time, he developed an interest in biomaterials and bioreactors, especially concerning bone and cartilage. He got the chance to research on silk fibroin as a biomaterial for bone and cartilage tissue engineering in various projects. In his graduation project he investigated the effects of hydrostatic pressure on native bovine articular cartilage using a hydrostatic pressure bioreactor. In 2018 he obtained his MSc and after a short period at Trauma Care Consult (Austria) he joined the Orthopaedic Biomechanics research group in 2019.
