Research profile

Fred Steennis is part-time professor of Diagnostics in Nets with the research group Electrical Energy Systems at the TU/e department of Electrical Engineering. His main affiliation is with DNV GL where he is a senior principal consultant on underground & submarine power cables. He has extensive knowledge on degradation mechanisms of power cables and related test methods, both in the field and the laboratory.At TU/e he teaches and studies diagnostics for power cables. A main development that he started at the TU/e is Smart Cable Guard (SCG), where power cables can be diagnosed and monitored under operating conditions while localizing defects.

Academic background

Fred Steennis studied Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, The Netherlands) where he received his MSc degree in 1982. He then joined KEMA (now DNV GL, Arnhem, The Netherlands) to study degradation mechanisms in energy cables for the Dutch utilities. On this subject he wrote his doctoral thesis and obtained his PhD at Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands)in 1989. In 1991, he received the HiddeNijland award, a prestigious Dutch award of the power sector, awarded once every 4 years. Because of his expertise, Fred Steennis became the Dutch representative in the Cigré Study Committee on High Voltage Cables in the 1990's, as well as member of various international Working Groups. He is also a consultant on energy cables and author and teacher of courses in the field. Two present focus areas are Smart Cable Guard and Power Failure Investigation on underground power cables. In 1999, he was appointed part-time professor of Diagnostics in Nets at the department of Electrical Engineering of Eindhoven University of Technology.
