Research profile

Eefje Hendriks holds a Ph.D. degree (2020) on effective communication to reduce housing vulnerability in post-disaster reconstruction. She conducted field research in remote communities in Nepal, the Philippines, Senegal, Nicaragua and Haiti. She studied socioeconomic pathways to the adoption of hazard-resistant construction knowledge. She was granted a personal research scholarship for the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and several other research prizes. In her fieldwork and education, she collaborates with numerous NGOs, such as CRS, Cordaid, IFRC, Medicin Sans Frontieres, Habitat for Humanity, Stichting Samenscholen, Bambu Social.

Besides being an author and reviewer, Eefje is guest editor of a special issue of the International Journal for Disaster Prevention and Management giving a stage to Early Career researchers “Emerging voices and pathways to inclusive disaster studies”.

Education and Teaching

Eefje Hendriks is Director of the Disruptive Events educational programs on (inter)national Disaster Resilience, Migration and Climate Change and Coordinator of the Graduation School for the Built Environment at Avans University of Applied Sciences. She is a daily board member of Technology for Global Development, at the Eindhoven University of Technology, bridging the gap between science and practice. As a senior lecturer in disaster risk reduction, she gives several bachelor and master courses and hosts the Graduation Studio Borderless Engineering. She was recently awarded Sustainable teacher (Duurzame docent) of the Netherlands 2020 for higher education. She is a guest lecturer at the University of Sydney and the International University of Catalunya.
