"Optical transmission with fibers already dominates our backbone and edge networks. The next challenge is how to bring the massive bandwidth offered by fibers to user devices wirelessly at low power and costs."
Research profile
Eduward Tangdiongga leads the research activities on advanced optical access and local area networks of Electro-Optical Communication System group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Eduward’s key areas of expertise include electromagnetics, optics, hybrid optical radio communication technology. His research focuses on creating multitude solutions for last-mile communication links by means of integration of various wired and wireless technologies, taking into account performance versus cost issues. Specific areas of study include exploration of optical transmission techniques for high-performance short-distance networks where capital and operational expenditures should ultimately be low. Being an active member of IEEE photonics society, he has contributed over 500 papers and initiated and executed various (inter)national research projects as principal investigator. His research areas include passive optical networks, digital/analog radio over fibers, multimode silica/plastic optical fibers, photonic-assisted wireless technology, photonic neural networks and optical wireless / LiFi.
Academic background
Eduward Tangdiongga received his MSc and PhD degrees from the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, in 1994 and 2001, respectively. In 1994, he joined the COBRA Research Institute, currently named Institute for Photonic Integration, working in the field of high-speed optical switches using semiconductor optical devices. From 2001, he has been participating in several European Union and Dutch research programs targeting ultra-fast optical signal processing over medium and long-haul links. This work was partially financed by Dutch Scientific Organization (NWO) and EU projects BOOM. In 2006, he was appointed as an assistant professor on optical short-haul links which covers passive optical networks and inbuilding networks. He worked as principal investigator for the EU projects ALPHA, POF-PLUS and EURO-FOS and the NWO project FlexCom where high capacity and flexible passive optical networks and inhome networks were investigated. In 2016, he became an associate professor leading research activities on access and local area networks including microwave photonics and optical wireless technologies. He is building state-of-the-art lab infrastructures in a collaboration with various funding agencies and telecom companies to facilitate the works of his PhD students and postdocs. His current involvement is in the EU project BROWSE+ and ELIoT where optical wireless technologies for broadband communication and sensing will be demonstrated.
