In this globalized and rapidly changing world, scientific literateracy is crucial for educating students to be able to make informed decisions and act as responsible citizens. Being scientifically literate, to apply this insight in everyday decision making, students need to gain skills such as argumentation, critical thinking, interrogating media, assessing the validity of information sources and thinking ethically.
Dr Dürdane Bayram-Jacobs is an Assistant Professor at the Eindhoven School of Education (ESoE), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). She holds a bachelor degree in physics teaching from Middle East Technical University (METU), Turkey. She worked for 10 years as a physics & science teacher at secondary schools in Turkey. She has worked as a principal investigator and researcher on various local and EU projects, served as a member on the External Policy and Relations Committee member at NARST. Her research interests are; Socio-scientific Issues (SSI), science education for citizenship, Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of science teachers, formative evaluation of SSI lessons, and innovation in education.
D. Bayram Jacobs, prior to her appointment at TU/e, worked at Radboud University Department of Science Education (2016 - April 2020) and at TU Delft Department of Science Education and Communication (2013 – 2016). Previously she lived and worked in Ankara/Turkey at Ankara University Faculty of Educational Sciences (2005-2010) as a researcher and teacher educator. She received her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialisation in professional development of physics and science teachers, and a master degree, with a concentration in comparative research in initial teacher training of science teachers, from Ankara University Faculty of Educational Sciences.
