Personal profile

Our world is in desperate need of CO2 reduction to alter climate change. Sustainable chemical engineering and chemistry will play a major role in this.

Research profile

Dannie van Osch is an experimental chemical engineer and chemist. His research interest includes sustainable chemistry and chemical engineering. During his academic career his focus has been on sustainable and innovative chemistry and chemical engineering, which includes research into spinning disc reactors, microreactor technology, visible light photocatalysis, and innovative solvents. As a Ph.D. student his colleagues and he discovered hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), opening a new field of research, that are widely acknowledged as innovative and sustainable water-immiscible solvents.

In the combination of his currents jobs he works on the investigation and commercialization of the production of crude lignin oil. CLO, analogous to the fossil variety, is the basis for countless downstream applications like chemicals, materials and fuels.

Academic background

Dannie van Osch studied Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) where he received his Master's degree (cum laude) in 2014. He continued with a PhD in September 2014 under the supervision of Prof. Maaike Kroon, which shifted to and Prof. Remco Tuinier, associate Prof. Catarina Esteves and Jaap van Spronsen in January 2016, which he finished in September 2018 with his thesis 'Design and Application of Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents'. In February 2019 he continued with postdoctoral research for four days a week in the group of Prof. Emiel Hensen and started as the Chief Business Officer at Vertoro one day a week. In 2018 he was chosen as Young European Talent and in 2019 as CAS Future Leader. In 2019 he was also awarded a One Young World Shell Scholarship. He is ambassador of the Young European Talent Program and member of the Brightlands Young Professionals Advisory Board.
