Academic background
Daniel Kapitan studied Physics at Leiden University, the Netherlands where he obtained his MSc in 1994. He subsequently obtained his PhD in Physics at University of Oxford in 1999, working on industrial applications of micromachining using high-power lasers in a collaboration with Philips, Robert Bosch and TNO. After a short post-doc at Macquarie University, Sydney he left academia to work in the telecoms industry for more than 10 years, first as a strategy consultant at Arthur D. Little and Roland Berger, followed by various roles at T-Mobile Netherlands.
He decided to switch to the healthcare industry in 2011 and co-founded a start-up, GIDS.com, as a spin-off from Gupta Strategists that provided analytics-as-a-service for hospitals. He moved on to implement a digital platform for a chain of specialty clinics that was later acquired by Bergman Clinics. His professional career came full circle in 2018, when he decided to pick-up his old métier as a freelance consultant, this time working primarily for government and healthcare organisations. Through combining his work as an advisor, lecturer, and applied researcher, he aims for a positive contribution to make AI more trustworthy and democratic and apply ‘AI for good’. You can read more about his work on his personal website (https://kapitan.net, in Dutch) or on his LinkedIn profile.
