Joanne Oh holds a degree in ‘B. Eng. (Hons.) Electronics majoring in Optical Engineering’ from Multimedia University (MMU) in Malaysia. In 2011, she graduated with a master degree, ‘Erasmus Mundus MSc. in Photonics’, with great distinction. She completed her master thesis on ‘The Analysis of Epitaxial and Solution-grown Indium Phosphide’. In March 2017, she completed her PhD with cum laude, in her research on ‘Free-Space Transmission with Passive Two-Dimensional Beam Steering for Indoor Optical Wireless Networks’.
In addition to academia, in 2006, Joanne was affiliated to Avago Technologies in Penang, Malaysia, where she worked as an ‘Optics Design Engineer’. Shortly after, she was awarded a fellowship from the ‘Yayasan Tuanku Fauziah’ foundation for her academic and leadership achievements. As a result, she was appointed a ‘Siemens Scholar’ in March 2007, by Siemens Kuala Lumpur, where she completed an on-job training on IT business solutions (Business Intelligence, Enterprise Content Management, and RFID Asset Tagging) at Siemens Integrated Business Solutions business unit in Malaysia. The second half of the on-job-training was carried out at SIEMENS IT Solutions & Services Gmbh & Co., C-LAB Optical Interconnection Technology, Paderborn, Germany. After completion of the scholar program, she was assigned to Osram Opto Semiconductors R&D Asia facility as a ‘Process Development Lighting Engineer’ (2008) and later, as a ‘Project Leader’ in product development for solid state lighting (2009).
In June 2017, she was attached to Signify as an ‘Optical Wireless Communication Architect’ in the LiFi venture. In April 2020, she joined the Technical University of Eindhoven as an ‘Assistant Professor’ in the Electro-optical Communication Systems group.
Her current research interests are in optical wireless communication systems, optical fiber communication systems, optics, localization techniques and PICs for optical communication.
