Research profile

Hans van Duijn is Full Professor of Applied Analysis in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His field of specialization is mathematical research into differential equations. Key research topics include elliptic and parabolic free boundary problems, conservation laws, homogenization and modeling flow and transport in porous media, biomedical applications. Hans has taught a variety of courses related to analysis, differential equations and mathematical modeling. This involved both service teaching to engineering students as well as teaching to University math students.

Academic background

Hans van Duijn studied Applied Physics at TU/e and obtained his PhD in Mathematics at Leiden University for his work in the area of Nonlinear Diffusion Problems. He has worked at CWI, the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science in Amsterdam, as a part-time Professor at Delft University of Technology and as an Affiliate Professor at Leiden University. He has also worked as a researcher at the Delft Soil Mechanics Laboratory.

Hans has held visiting positions with the University of Minnesota School of Mathematics and Minnesota Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, the Centre for Environmental Mechanics in Canberra and the Weierstrass Institut für Angewandte Mathematik und Stochastik (WIAS), Berlin. He has also been a Visiting Professor at Bonn University, Rice University, the Paris Ecole Normale Superieure and Université Lyon. He is Editor-in-Chief of Computational Geosciences and a member of the editorial board of Interfaces and Free Boundaries and Transport in Porous Media. Hans has been Chancellor of TU/e since 2005.
