Research profile

Cees Midden is professor of Human-Technology Interaction at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands and chair of the section of Human-Technology |Interaction, School of Innovation Science. He received a degree in Psychology at the University of Leiden. His PhD research also at the University of Leiden pertained the perception of large-scale technological risks. For eight years he was a senior researcher at the National Laboratories for Energy Research in the Netherlands specialising on the perception of energy risks and behavior change strategies to promote energy conservation behavior. For a similar period he was associate professor at the Department of Psychology at Leiden University. Since 1991 he is professor at Eindhoven University of Technology, specialising in the interaction between humans and technological systems. Since 1993 he is chair of the group Human Technology Interaction at TU/e. His research focus is on the social and cognitive factors of human-technology interactions as these become apparent in the use of products and systems. He published various books and over 100 articles on environmental consumer behaviour, on the perception and communication of technological risks and the adoption of innovations. Current topic of interest are trust in sociotechnical systems, emotional and automatic components in judgment and behavioral choice. Current projects involve persuasive communication and the use of risk-containing products and systems.
