Research profile
Catarina Fernandes is an assistant professor at the Signal Processing Systems group (department of Electrical Engineering), a member of the Biomedical Diagnostics (BM/d) research lab, and of the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center (e/MTIC). Her research focuses on medical image analysis, particularly on quantitative multiparametric and multimodal imaging with an emphasis on the domains of oncology, neurology, and perioperative care. Catarina Fernandes' research is carried out in collaboration with industrial and clinical partners.
Academic background
Catarina Fernandes obtained her master's degree in Biophysics Biomedical Engineering from the University of Lisbon (Portugal) in 2013. She carried out her Ph.D. research at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), investigating how multiparametric MRI can be used to localize and better target treatment strategies for recurrent prostate cancer after previous radiotherapy. In 2019, Catarina Fernandes obtained her Doctoral degree at the Leiden University (Leiden, The Netherlands) with a thesis entitled "Multi-parametric MRI to guide salvage treatment of recurrent prostate cancer".
In 2020 she joined the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) as a postdoctoral researcher at the Biomedical Diagnostics (BM/d) research lab, focusing on medical image analysis methods applied in oncology and perioperative care. Since February 2023 she is an assistant professor in the BM/d lab, with a research focus on multimodal image fusion.
Quote
Diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive imaging features are not always visible with the naked eye. Mining patients’ biological signals and imaging data thus has the potential to lead to improved healthcare.
