Quote

“Innovation, in all its forms, is what I strive to understand in my research. I am intrigued by the challenges companies face when developing something entirely new, but also by the major transformations that innovation brings to economic systems.”

Research profile

Carolina Castaldiis Associate Professor in Innovation in Service-based Economies at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Her areas of expertise include Economics and Management of Innovation, IPR (patents and trademarks), Innovation in Services and Evolutionary Economics. Her research deals broadly with the economics and management of innovation and in particular with the peculiarities of service innovation. Conceptually, she uses insights from evolutionary economics to understand growth processes at different levels of analysis, from firms to regions. Empirically, she exploits patents and trademarks to develop original indicators to analyze the innovative performance of firms and regions.

Carolina’scurrent research is focused on intangible forms of innovation like new services and new business models, where technology is not everything that matters. Her goal is to capture the salient properties of these forms of innovation and she uses novel indicators, such as trademarks, to identify them in large-scale studies as well.

Academic background

Carolina Castaldi holds a PhD in Economics and Management from Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa, Italy and was a Robert Solow Postdoctoral Fellow. She has worked at TU/e since 2009.
