Academic background

Bregje de Wildt studied Physiotherapy at Fontys University of Applied Sciences where she received her BSc degree in 2015. She received her MSc degree in 2018 in Human Movement Sciences at the VU University of Amsterdam. In November 2018 she joined the Orthopedic Biomechanics group at the Biomedical Engineering department of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) as a Doctoral Candidate. In her research, she works under supervision of Associate Professor Sandra Hofmann on the development of a three-dimensional in vitro model for bone remodeling.

Research profile

Bregje de Wildt is a Doctoral Candidate (PhD) in Bioengineering Bone at the Orthopaedic Biomechanics research group. Her research focuses on the development of the three-dimensional in vitro model for human bone remodeling. Bone is a highly dynamic tissue with multiple mechanical and metabolic functions that are maintained by the process of bone remodeling. In this process, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes work together to maintain bone strength and mineral homeostasis. In skeletal diseases like osteoporosis, this bone remodeling is affected resulting in a net bone loss. To develop and test drugs for these bone diseases, an in vitro model for human bone remodeling might be used, addressing the principle reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal experiments. In this model, osteoblasts, osteocytes, and osteoclasts will be cultured within one construct under physiological biochemical and biomechanical conditions. To develop of this model covers the following techniques: cell (co-)culture, bioreactor culture, biomaterials, micro-computed tomography, (confocal) light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and biochemical analyses.
